Free Vintage Thanksgiving Clip Art

I love Thanksgiving! Not only does the weather finally cool off down here in South Florida, but there’s just a lovely vibe to the holiday. With its focus on family, home and hearth — along with some football and a major parade — it’s a joy. This vintage Thanksgiving clip art reflects that feeling.

Speaking of a parade (how’s that for a segue?), my niece will be performing this Thanksgiving with the South Florida Special Needs Color Guard in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The color guard incorporates an inspiring group of developmentally disabled people of all ages. They usually get standing ovations when they perform because people are so blown away by what they’re able to accomplish. You can read more about them on my contemporary Thanksgiving clip art hub.

Free Vintage Clip Art: People Around the World

Although the free clip art images below don’t represent every country and every ethnicity, their focus is more international than usually found in vintage art collections. We can thank Dover Publications for that, because with the exception of the three African American images (which come from my personal stash), these free clip art images were gleaned from Dover free samples.

Free Vintage Cigar Labels

April 11th, 2008 HolidayCrafts Posted in Free Vintage Art, Men, Product Labels, Women 6 Comments »

La-Globina-vintage-cigar-label While researching vintage cigar labels for this post, I tried to find an ethnically diverse cross-section of images. That was challenging, given the racial stereotypes prevalent in the period these labels come from.

Noble depictions of American Indians were abundant, yet degrading stereotypes existed in almost equal numbers. Cubans faired well, however, because as cigar makers they had more control over the packaging. I found only a few images of Asians — respectful or otherwise — and was surprised to not find more since travel to Asia was becoming popular in the era these images hail from. I also found that Europeans and people from the Middle East were generally portrayed in a positive light.

It was challenging, though, to find African American characterizations that didn’t make me cringe. I won’t describe some of the things I saw. Take my word for it; they were offensive. But that’s a reflection of the time the labels came from. Fortunately, I also was able to find some that presented African Americans in a respectful manner, and you’ll see those below.

Regardless of the subject, what impresses me most about these labels is that they’re such wonderful examples of fine art. It’s amazing to me that so much talent, time and effort was put into creating images that were eventually destined for the trash. Thankfully, some still live on in digital form!
