These 4th of July clip art images are such beautiful examples of vintage July 4th art! Fireworks are featured in half of them, because what would the July 4th be without fireworks? Children are represented in most of them, as they frequently are in vintage art images. And what would the Fourth of July be without two of our most influential presidents, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln? They’re here, too, ready to help you celebrate the fourth of July.

4th of July Free Coloring Pages

Like our horse coloring pages, these 4th of July coloring pages are unusual. They were originally color vintage July 4th images that I transformed in Picnik. As a result, they don’t have the usual thick lines and white backgrounds of traditional coloring pages. But they do have something ordinary patriotic coloring pages don’t: a genuine sense of history. This would make them lovely to use for crafts, too, such as decoupage, card-making or scrapbooking. Hurray for the 4th of July! It might be a little hard for our international visitors to understand, but in the United States we love the American flag and our national birthday party that happens every year on July 4th. Free Vintage American Flag Clip Art

In case you’re not aware, Flag Day is the anniversary of the official adoption of the American flag by the Marine Committee of the Continental Congress in 1777.

Woodrow Wilson proclaimed June 14 as the first official National Flag Day in 1916 but it wasn’t until 1949 that an Act of Congress was signed to formally establish the holiday. Interestingly, though, Flag Day isn’t a given; it’s at the president’s discretion to officially proclaim the observance each year. That is unless you live in Pennsylvania, which is the only state that recognizes it as a legal holiday.

Should you really crave more information about Flag Day, see Title 36 Sec. 110 of the US Code, which is the official statute governing its celebration.

Free Vintage Art Memorial Day and Veterans Day Greeting Cards

It’s not traditional to send patriotic cards to US military veterans for Memorial Day or Veterans Day, but there’s no reason not to begin that tradition right now.

In March 2008, the 4,000th American was pronounced dead in the Iraq war. That means you might even know people who recently gave their lives for their country. So why not send our surviving veterans or the relatives of someone killed in the war one of the authentic old-fashioned cards, either as an e-card or on the front of a postcard or greeting card. (You also can use these designs as clip art or to make iron-on transfers for clothes.)

No matter how you feel about war, it’s the least we can do to say thank you for those who put themselves in harm’s way.
