St. Patrick’s Day was originally a religious holiday, but as any schoolchild knows, it’s now a day to wear green to keep from being pinched. And as the adults know, it’s also an occasion that gives us permission to drink lots of green beer and have a good time. Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Another thing I like about them is that they’re ethnically diverse for the most part — and in a good way. Vintage cigar labels were often filled with negative interpretations of African Americans. But vintage fruit crate labels seem to be more egalitarian. As a result, you’ll see Latin Americans and African Americans presented in relatively positive contexts. Having said that, I know some people might rankle at the term “Aunty” being used along with the image of an African American woman, because that term was used during slavery. But if you remember the time these labels came from and how far we’ve come in the interim, it might be easier to appreciate that particular label for its artistic value.

Speaking of a parade (how’s that for a segue?), my niece will be performing this Thanksgiving with the South Florida Special Needs Color Guard in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The color guard incorporates an inspiring group of developmentally disabled people of all ages. They usually get standing ovations when they perform because people are so blown away by what they’re able to accomplish. You can read more about them on my contemporary Thanksgiving clip art hub. It’s good to see that at least industry leaders knew they needed to reach out to people of different nationalities, even if the general populace of the time didn’t necessarily embrace that viewpoint. Having said that, the principle of inclusion may not have been in play when Rough on Rats put a Chinese man about to eat a mouse on its label. Let’s hope they were just kidding around.
