When I was a magazine art director about 100 years ago, we didn’t have electronic free clip art. That might seem incomprehensible to younger people, but we had to jump through all kinds of hoops just to get images onto the pages of a magazine. It involved X-Acto knives and sticky wax, which always seemed to be stuck to parts of me, instead of just to the back of the clip art.

I used to design a lot of small ads every month, many of which required some kind of artwork to make them stand out. That was when my love affair with clip art began. Many years later I created Vintage Holiday Crafts and started designing my own clip art because I couldn’t find the quality and type of clip art I wanted unless I paid for it. The same was true for scrapbook papers, which can cost a bundle if you buy them by the sheet at the craft store. I assumed other people had the same issues.

But now I’ve developed a new problem: I have a lot of free contemporary and vintage clip art and scrapbook images. My solution was to compile it into the Free Clip Art Sourcebook, which links to free clip art and scrapbooking image resources squirreled away all over my little online world. The images are categorized alphabetically by subject and located in one document, so everything is easy to find.

Just print one of these free certificates on nice paper, sign it, and then place it in a wrapped box or fancy envelope. For extra impact, you could even frame it or put it in a certificate holder. No matter how you present it, this expression of love will go a long way toward giving your loved one the perfect gift — your heart.

All four of these free Valentine’s Day love coupons are available as PDF and Word documents. If you’d like to change the wording or the clip art, download the Word document of the design you choose. If you’d like to use any of the certificates as is, you can download either version.

Want to customize your certificate?

To change the clip art, use the Easy Art Finder in the left sidebar to find just the image you want.

To change the fonts or clip art in Windows, make sure you’re using one of the Word documents above, not a PDF. To change the clip art, click on the existing art within the document, then click the Delete key on your keyboard. Then, add a new text box and insert your clip art into it. (For help working with text boxes and inserting pictures, consult the help menu in your version of Word.)

Free Holiday Gift Certificates

Short on cash this holiday season? Or maybe you just want to give a gift that’s a little more personal? Try these free gift certificates for Christmas and Hanukkah, which are free and in effect give the gift of you.

It’s so simple! Here’s how it works:

1. Scroll down to choose one of the five designs. They’re available as PDFs if you want to use them as-is; or as Microsoft Word documents, if you’d like to alter them.

Print the one you like (whether one of the original designs or your modified version) on nice paper. To create a vintage art feel, you can get parchment-look paper. There also are plenty of other nice papers you can choose from that will dress up your finished gift certificate.

2. Think of something you can give to a loved one that would mean a lot, then write that on the gift certificate. Here are some examples:

Offer to baby-sit for a certain number of hours
Offer to keep the kids amused at a friend’s New Year’s Eve party, so the adults can have fun undisturbed
Cook a complete dinner, from soup to nuts
Drive the kids to school for a week
Offer to house-sit for a friend who travels a lot
Walk the dogs for a week

Be creative! You probably know what your friends and family need and want. Just imagine how happy the recipients will be when they that see you understand that and are willing to give of yourself to help them.

3. Use a large decorative envelope to protect and present your certificate, or put the certificate into a flat box and wrap it, for an even more elegant effect.
